Why Your Doctor Wants You to Eat More Fish

Heart Health

The American Heart Association recommends one to two meals of non-fried fish per week for better cardiovascular health. A major NHLBI study found higher omega-3 intake was linked to a 19% reduction in major cardiovascular events and a 28% reduction in heart attacks. Meanwhile, daily consumption of red meat triples blood levels of TMAO, a chemical linked to increased heart disease risk.

Cancer Risk Reduction

Red meat consumption increases the risk of multiple cancers including nasopharynx, pancreas, and lung. The World Cancer Research Fund recommends no more than 12–18 ounces of red meat per week. Fish has not been associated with increased cancer risk — and the anti-inflammatory properties of omega-3 fatty acids may help suppress tumor development.

Brain Health & Cognitive Development

DHA makes up approximately 40% of the polyunsaturated fatty acids in the human brain. Seafood intake during pregnancy is associated with favorable measures of cognitive development in children. No amount of beef, chicken, or pork provides meaningful DHA. Only fish and seafood do.

Diabetes Prevention

Research shows that people with high red meat and poultry intake are twice as likely to develop type 2 diabetes compared to those who do not consume meat. Substituting red meat with fish has been studied as a healthier choice for people at risk.

Weight Management

Seafood's high protein and low-calorie density support weight loss by enhancing satiety and boosting metabolism. Fish is easier to digest than red meats, reducing bloating and gastrointestinal distress.
